Silencing the Priest? Priesting the Silence? DAD29 - August 17, 2017 ... while the Priest is pronouncing them, there should be no other prayers or singing, and the organ or other musical instruments should be silent . OK, then. Why do we sing an "offertory hymn" right over the 'presidential prayer' of the priest? That is the practice I have observed in two different parishes, both claiming "orthopraxy". ...http://dad29.blogspot.com/2017/08/silencing-priest-priesting-silence.html

The English Catholic Hymn Book and Emily Clarke's Not Very Pindarick Ode to Bergoglio FR HUNWICKE'S MUTUAL ENRICHMENT - August 16, 2017 Here is a piece I originally wrote when I was still pp at S Thomas's. I added the last bit in early February after being sent a link to Emily Clarke's unbelievable ditty. I include also some of the original thread. When I took over the Church of Sancti Thomae Martyris iuxta Ferriviam Oxoniensium, I found a lovely pile of small green hymn books, apparently dating from the 1930s, in a cobwebbyhttp://liturgicalnotes.blogspot.com/2017/08/the-english-catholic-hymn-book-and.html

"Lantern of the Lothians" ATONEMENTONLINE - July 16, 2017 One of the truly beautiful hymn tunes in the Church's treasury is David Evans' "Lucerna Laudoniae." The name of the tune means "Lantern of the Lothians," which was a Franciscan monastery at Haddington, East Lothian in Scotland. The monastery was destroyed in 1355, but in the fifteenth-century a church was built on the site – and it is now immortalized by this simple and dignified hymn tune. There are several texts which have made use ...http://atonementparish.blogspot.com/2017/07/lantern-of-lothians.html

A Special Day for Breviary Lovers COFFEE AND CANTICLES - July 11, 2017 ... then you should consider him a special patron. It was St. Benedict, after all, who refined the already existing monastic custom of praying the psalms at regular hours throughout the day and night. Our breviaries today are all based, to great extent, on his system. So how to honor St. Benedict? That might mean saying his office today as a feast rather than a memorial--use the entire common of holy men/religious. Or use the following poem as a ...http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/CoffeeAndCanticles-TheDivineOfficeInYourLife/~3/C-aaRXj8r8I/a-special-day-for-breviary-lovers.html

Song for the Day A WING AND A PRAYER - July 4, 2017 ... sometimes debated that it should be made official). Whether or not it was Irving Berlin's intention, to me it is more a hymn (and is a hymn nothing more than a prayer set to music) than anything else. Listen and enjoy . National Praise and Petition A WING AND A PRAYER - July 4, 2017 It was originally a poem by Katharine Lee Bates. The hymn was composed by Samuel A. Ward a decade earlier. The two were combined in 1910. *** O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! What Fairer Light? FOUNTAIN OF ELIAS - June 29, 2017 ... in bed? Ask St Peter, as he was fleeing from Rome, where Nero was burning Christians at his garden parties, and suddenly he ran into Our Lord, Who was walking along the Appian Way in the opposite direction. Quo vadis, Domine? "Where are you going, Lord?" asked St Peter. "To Rome, to be crucified again," Jesus replied. And St. Peter knew what he had to do...he had to go back. He was arrested and crucified, upside down, at his own request, for he felt unworthy to die in the same ...http://fountainofelias.blogspot.com/2017/06/what-fairer-light.html

The Sequence of Easter THE CATHOLIC HERITAGE ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND - June 27, 2017 ... Pentecost, Veni Sancte Spiritus , of Corpus Christi, Lauda Sion Salvatorem , and All Souls, Dies Irae. The Sequence is a hymn that is sung on particular feasts immediately before the Gospel. Taken with the long Tract of the First Sunday of Lent, the effect can be the heightening of expectation before the singing of the Gospel. However, the Sequence, unlike the Introit and the Gradual and Alleluia, seems to emphasise the text over the music. That is to say, ...http://catholicheritage.blogspot.com/2017/04/the-sequence-of-easter.html

La Revedere TIGERISH WATERS - June 26, 2017 Not for ever by still waters, would we idly quiet stay, but would smite the living fountain from the rocks along our way. So goes the hymn "Father hear the prayer we offer" that I heard sung for the first time in ages this Sunday. You may have guessed by now that I inhabit waters that are tigerish rather than still and this old hymn has always been been like my signature tune. John the Baptist MONASTERY OF THE HOLY CROSS - June 24, 2017 ... Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. Indeed, it is John who goes before Jesus Christ in the very spirit of Elijah, the greatest of the Israelite prophets. John, then, is a crucial link to our Semitic cultural heritage. His testimony to Christ is the fulfillment of the longing of the preeminent representatives of the People of Israel, the longing to see God's face. "Behold, the Lamb of God!" says John. John, along with Our Lady, is the model disciple, the one who "must decrease" that ...http://chicagomonk.org/about-us/the-priors-blog/john-the-baptist/

My New Favourite Hymn THE INN AT THE END OF THE WORLD - June 19, 2017 ... sought Him Love to the uttermost. The multitudes pressed round Him, And thronged His holy seat, Only to touch his garment, Only to kiss-his feet; And from Him went forth virtue, And healing powers, and grace; They knew his loving presence, Who might not see his face. Then came the unbelievers, They wrecked the House of God, The Sacrament of Jesus Beneath their feet they trod; Tore down the sacred altar, Defiled his holy shrine; Cast out the mystic presence Of Jesus, Lord Divine. But as for us, ...http://thesixbells.blogspot.com/2017/06/my-new-favourite-hymn.html
